Menu Plan... er, Tuesday?

Monday Chow mein
Tuesday Cheesy Chicken patties, mashed spuds, steamed veg
Wednesday Chicken & vegtable pies
Thursday Spiral pasta bolongnese ala SilverMoon
Friday Fish & Chips
Saturday Honey, garlic & chilli chicken skewers, rice
Sunday Broccoli & bacon pasta bake

This was supposed to go up yesterday, obviously, but I caught a big case of the lazies. We were supposed to have the Chowmein on Tuesday, and Tuesday's dinner on Monday, but I really couldn't get the enthusiasm up for such an elaborate procedure, to end up with patties. Then I found we didn't have enough cheese anyway. So last night I didn't bother to blog, considering the chow mein was leftovers, that had already been blogged about. And I totally forgot about Menu Plan Monday. Oops.

My monthly reads - February

Please forgive me for having Jane Austen on here. Trust me, I doubt my brain will ever forgive me for putting it through the torture of reading it. Definite worst book of the month. But hey, at least now I can say I've read it, and it's one more off the 1001 to read.

Best book? I was a Teenage Fairy - Francesca Lia Block.

Best chapter/story in a book? The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More - Roald Dahl, being the title story.

I'd read this before in primary school, and it made a big impression on me then. I always thought I'd read it in his auto-biography, because it had such a "true" ring to it, and because the last story in the collection was a story from Dahl's life. I recently re-read both Boy and Going Solo, and didn't find the story, much to my disappointment. Now, meaning to read another Dahl book (Danny, Champion of the world) which is on the 1001 list, I stumbled across Henry Sugar by accident, and was kinda upset to realise it was fiction. But then I googled it, and found it was (loosely) based on a real guy after all.

Ok, enough blather, here's what I read in February.

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test - Tom Wolfe
Cooking up a Storm - Sam Stern
The Subtle Knife - Philip Pullman
The Amber Spyglass - Philip Pullman
The Usborne First Picture Cookbook - Fiona Watt
Cool Kids Cook - Donna Hay
Chocolates and sweets to make - Rebecca Gilpin
Real Food, Real Fast - Sam Stern
A Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula Le Guin
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More - Roald Dahl
Are you there God? It's Me, Margaret - Judy Bloom
Bridge to Terabithia - Katherine Paterson
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
I was a Teenage Fairy - Francesca Lia Block
A Town Like Alice - Nevil Shute
Let's Party - Alison Bell
Kid's Party Ideas - Marion Haslam
Obernewtyn - Isobelle Carmody
The Farseekers - Isobelle Carmody

Cheesy ham and macaroni bake

Recipe here.
The recipe called for 2 1/2 cups of macaroni, making it 5 cups, since I was making a double batch. But unfortunately 500g only equals just under 4 cups. This might have been a little more filling with that little bit more pasta. Serves 8, my well padded posterior! But we discussed this over dinner, and since the recipe was for cold pasta slice for lunches, we allowed that lunch serves can be smaller since they come with fruit and a juice box, and that eating it hot might serve 4 adults. When feeding 3 adults and two toddlers, you'll need dessert.

Despite an initial refusal to eat from Master Three because it "smells yuck" (smelled fine to the rest of us) I had to act quick to get a close up, since I forgot before dishing up. Again. I think I need a post-it note or sign on my crockery cupboard reminding me to take a photo before dishing up. As you can see, you almost missed out. ;)

The second batch (which I actually cooked first, earlier this afternoon) is sitting in the freezer, and will make a nice light meal with dessert, perhaps fruit salad or something else not too greasy, to counteract all the cheese, or a rather hearty meal for us, on a night when the housemate is not home.
